2010 Rhino Rally

Williston, FL ;By Tom Schewe
02/12-14/2010
A cold gray morning sky, more closely resembling something one would see in Wisconsin in November rather than Florida in February greeted the 125 shooters that braved the conditions for this year’s Rhino Rally. For Sporting Clay Shooter’s in and around Florida “The Big Three” (The Rhino Rally, The Seminole Cup , and The Caribbean Classic) mark the start of the Competitive Sporting Clays Shooting Season.

These events are much anticipated February breaks for winter weary snowbirds looking to enjoy some warm Florida sunshine and a place to sharpen their shotgunning skills. The property’s excellent terrain and Team Promatic’s Heyward Cunningham over the years have combined to challenged the shooters with targets that are enjoyable to shoot yet have you talking to yourself as to “what went wrong” and “how could I miss that?"

While the terrain and the targets where as good as ever for this year’s event, that great mix of blue skies, 70 degree temperatures, and low humidity that make Florida such a nice place to be in the winter, was lost to the Global Warming that deposited snow in 49 of the 50 states and gripped the nation in a record setting cold spell last week. The preliminary the day before was shot in the rain… Not just a little sprinkle but RAIN, so the question on everyone’s mind was “What sort of surprises did those early morning clouds hold?” Fortunately, the gray skies broke by 10am and completely cleared off by noon and for the rest of the shoot the weather wasn’t really a factor in the competition other then the few “true Floridians” who were truly freezing. The majority of the crowd came to the consensus that as cold as it might be in Florida at that particular time, once the sun came out it was still warmer than “back home”.

Top Honors in the Main event go again go to Doug Vine (187)who, as he did last year, he came from behind on the second day. Doug also was HOA in 20Ga (47) & 28Ga (49). Bill McGuire (186) was 2nd in the Main and won the Preliminary (96) & 5-stand (48). Brad Kidd won FITASC (88) and Brad Ramsey (49) topped the .410 field. Also taking top honors in the Main; AA shooter Jake Wisenbaker(150), A & Sub JR winner Will Hinton(170), B shooter Champ William Trotter (142), C class Gary Padgett(149), Robert Mitchell(129) was the top D and George Johns with a 131 best the rest is E class. The JR. Champ was Brandon Chatagnier(154), Jane Singleton won the lady’s title. Dale Scarborough (154), Patrick Welch(167), & Bud Wolfe(143) topped the Vet, Super Vet, and Super Sr. Vet Divisions.
